The second LTE-enabled smartphone launched for Verizon is this Samsung Droid Charge which came out in 2011 and much like most of the other touchscreen devices it adopts a slab design, with a sloped back that makes the phone easier to hold on your palm. It measures 5.11 x 2.66 x 0.46 inches so for some people it might be a little bit too big, but at least it weighs just 5.04 ounces.

One of the best features of this smartphone would have to be the gorgeous 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display that has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and packs 50% more subpixels in comparison to the Super AMOLED touchscreens produced by the Korean company. This means that it can provide much more clarity and it also improves the outdoor visibility. Another great thing is that the touchscreen is very responsive as the apps launch as soon as you tap on them, while moving through the available homescreens and menu settings is a breeze.

Sitting below the splendid screen are the four traditional buttons: home, menu, back and search. Looking at the left side of the Samsung Droid Charge we find the microUSB port and the volume rocker, while on the right spine is the power button which sits next to the HDMI port. On top of the smartphone Samsung installed the 3.5mm jack, while the back of the phone holds an eight megapixel camera and its flash. We should also mention that it has a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera.

Since this is an Android-running smartphone, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it comes with GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, along with the usual array of Google services. One of the most interesting applications would have to be Samsung’s Media Hub video store which gives you the possibility to buy and rent TV shows and movies. The music player packs the basic player functions, along with a 5.1-channel surround sound, effects and a built-in equalizer.

The 8 mpx camera features autofocus, a flash, along with several editing functions. The quality of the pictures is great, managing to grab sharp lines and detailed images, while the indoor photos are also quite good, without any odd hues ruining the photos while the colors still look bright. We should mention that the camera can do 720p high definition video recording and the result is just as impressive as the still photos.

The Samsung Droid Charge is powered by a Hummingbird processor running at 1.0 GHz and packs 512MB of RAM. It has been fitted with a 1,600 mAh lithium-ion battery that has a rated standby time of up to 12 days, while the talk time is of up to 11 hours. The FCC says that this smartphone has a digital SAR rating of 1.01 W/kg.

One of the many phones launched by Huawei back in 2011 is the Ascend which is an Android 2.1-running smartphone available for MetroPCS and Cricket Wireless. Even though this is an entry-level handset, at the time of its launch it cost $100 which we find to be a bit expensive. The phone features a sloping chin and rounded corners, while the glossy black plastic face and rear have been dressed with a dark gray bezel as well as polished chrome sides.

The Huawei Ascend measures 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.55 inches and weighs 4.7 ounces, making it comfortable to hold in the hand while at the same time giving a solid feel. It has been fitted with a 3.5-inch HVGA display that has a 480 x 320-pixel resolution and can show up to 262,000 colors. It’s not the best screen out there but for the price segment in which it belongs to, this display does a good job. We like that the virtual keyboard sports large and comfortable buttons, plus you also get by default the Swype keyboard.

Sitting below this screen you will notice that Huawei installed a trackball along with four hard buttons: Menu, Back, along with the Talk & End keys which have been intensively stylized. On the sides of the smartphone you will find the microSD card slot, power button, volume rocker and the camera shutter. The back cover is made from plastic and it holds a 3.2 megapixel camera.

Even though this is an entry-level smartphone, the Huawei Ascend comes with a nice set of features, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, as well as support for voice dialing, threaded text & multimedia messaging and a speakerphone. Running on Android 2.1, it comes with various applications such as Google Maps, Navigation, Gmail, an audio recorder, YouTube, a file manager and Latitude. The 3.2 megapixel camera of the Huawei Ascend doesn’t come with an LED flash so the photos taken inside are quite blurry and dull. The outdoor shots are a little bit better but given the low resolution of the camera the pictures are not impressive. You’ll be storing the photos on the 512MB internal memory or on the microSD card (up to a capacity of 16GB).

The phone is powered by a 600 MHz processor while the battery has a rated talk time of up to 3.5 hours, while in standby mode it should provide enough juice for 12.4 days. The FCC concluded that the Ascend has a digital SAR rating of 1.19 W/kg.

Compared to the original Score, the M is slightly larger due to its bigger battery, making the device measure 4.4 x 2.44 and 0.54 inches thick, while weighing 4.8 ounces. We like that it boasts a solid construction and features a black glossy coating, while its back is made from a rubberized material which makes the phone comfortable to hold in the hand, providing the necessary grip.

If you have a look on the left side of the ZTE Score M you will notice the microUSB port which remains hidden under an attached door, while the top of the phone is home for the 3.5mm headphone jack and the sleep/power button. Moving on to the right spine, this is the place where ZTE put the microSD card slot that is protected by a small door, along with the volume rocker. We should mention that the phone comes bundled with a 2GB microSD card. Below this slot you will have access to the dedicated camera button.

The front of the device is mostly occupied by the decent HVGA touchscreen display that measures 3.5 inches and boasts a 320 x 480-pixel resolution, offering a pixel density of 166 ppi. Sitting below this screen you will find the four regular buttons for accessing the menu, going home, back and initiating a search.

At the heart of this smartphone is a Qualcomm processor running at 600 MHz which although doesn’t sound too impressive, it’s enough for a device like this one. Since we’re dealing with an Android device, it’s no wonder that the ZTE Score M comes with Gmail, Google Books, Search, Maps with Navigation, YouTube, Talk and Places. We should mention that the OS is 2.3 Gingerbread so you don’t get the latest and greatest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

MetroPCS throws in several of its own applications which can be uninstalled if you don’t like them. Some examples include Metro’s own brand of maps, app market, mail, web browsing, along with MetroPCS Easy WiFi (A Wi-Fi hot-spot app), myMetro, MyExtras and Metro411. Also on board are a few task management apps like Bluetooth 2.1, calculator, alarm, text messaging, calendar, news & weather app, along with a voice recorder. You will also find a couple of rather uncommon applications like IM and Social for you social networking needs. If you still want more apps, you might want to know that there are three Yahoo!-branded applications: Yahoo Movies, Sportacular and Answers.

The ZTE Score M boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera that has a 4x digital zoom and offers you a choice of five white balance options, along with various quality adjustments and photo sizes. Also on board are settings for the saturation level, color effects and a brightness meter. The camcorder comes with just about the same settings, but both cameras lag a lot, while the quality is subpar.

The battery of the handset has a rated talk time of 4.3 hours, while the digital SAR rating stands at 1.45 W/kg.

Verizon Cell Phones – Casio G’zOne Ravine 2, Part I

One of the latest Verizon cell phones at the time of writing would have to be the Casio G’zOne Ravine 2 which is certainly a special device that will stand out from the rest of the crowd. One of the reasons for this is because we’re dealing with a big phone which measures 4.33 x 1.99 x 0.83 inches and weighs no less than 4.85 ounces. It also has some distinctive features like the ring around its external display and a ribbed hinge.

This isn’t what you would call a pretty phone but since it has been made to be durable, it doesn’t have to feature an appealing style. You can easily figure out that this is a phone made for Verizon since it adopts a black & red color scheme. What also stands out would have to be is the thick plastic skin. Even though it does not have rubber sidings, the Ravine 2 manages to remain comfortable and feels quite solid when you hold it in your hand.

According to the manufacturer, the device is capable of withstanding dust, shock, humidity, salt fog, immersion in water, as well as low and high temperatures. We should note that the moving parts, such as the ribbed hinge which is oversized, seems to be built to last.

The external LCD display of the Casio G’zOne Ravine 2 measures 1.38 inches and will show you the usual info, such as time and date, caller ID and signal strength. We should mention that this display is full color, but the downside is that you are not able to access the phone’s basic features without opening it up.

One of the downsides would have to be the 2.5mm jack so most likely you will have to use an adapter in order to plug in your favorite pair of headphones.

Open the phone and you will expose the 2.2-inch internal screen that has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Obviously, this isn’t a very good screen when you compare it to those expensive smartphones but even so it manages to provide fine graphics, bright colors, while the menu design is easy to navigate. The user can fiddle with the backlight time, brightness level, wallpaper & display theme, as well as the banner and the menu & dialing font size.
